The mission of the REF is to advance research and training to improve the health of people with rheumatic disease.
To effectively realize this mission, the REF adopted a multi-year strategic plan in 2009 focused on seven key organizational priorities:

The REF will strive to fund 100% of core awards applications that achieve “outstanding†ratings in the peer review process.
Goal B: Disease Targeted Research
The REF will maintain its commitment to disease-targeted research initiatives.
Goal C: Fundraising Coordination
The REF will coordinate fundraising and donor activities with the ACR and ARHP.
Goal D: Corporate Fundraising
The REF will increase non-pharmaceutical funding to 25% of total funding and maintain or increase the amount of pharmaceutical funding.
Goal E: Individual Fundraising
The REF will increase the number of new donors by 5% per year and increase the amounts given by current donors by 10% per year.
Goal F: REF Brand Recognition
The REF will gain recognition of the REF brand as the premier private source of funding for rheumatology research and training.
Goal G: Organizational Efficiency
The REF will ensure an average of 90% of all expenses is designated for program services.
