Cover image: The figure on the cover (from Loeser et al, page 2192) illustrates an assay for cell-associated matrix of chondrocytes that had been cultured in alginate beads in the presence of insulin-like growth factor 1 and osteogenic protein 1. After dissolution of the beads, cells are incubated with fixed erythrocytes. The matrix excludes the erythrocytes, providing a convenient assay to assess factors promoting matrix production.
