Cover image: The figure on the cover (from Tetlow et al, page 588) depicts staining for matrix metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8) in osteoarthritic cartilage. In this specimen, MMP-8 is localized to chondrocytes in the superficial zone near the articular surface. In concert with data on staining for other MMPs and interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor [alpha], these findings help elucidate the phenotype of chondrocytes in osteoarthritis and the process of cartilage destruction.
