image: These are award-winning images from the 2002 American
College of Rheumatology slide contest. The photomicrograph on the left
is a high magnification ([times]120) view of a masson stained cross-section
of a digital artery in a patient with diffuse scleroderma and digital
ischemia. There is intimal proliferation and obliteration of the arterial
lumen due to collagen deposition. The image on the right from the same
patient shows a hematoxylin-eosin stained low magnification ([times]15)
view of a digital artery demonstrating thrombus formation due to endothelial-cell
dysfunction, increased platelet activity and increased thrombogenicity
in scleroderma.
