Cover image: These are award-winning images from the 2001 American College of Rheumatology slide contest. Clinical appearance and photomicrographs demonstrating amyloidosis in a 76-year old female with abrupt onset of bilateral shoulder pain. A Congo red stain of the synovial fluid shows green birefringent material consistent with amyloid. The transmission electron micrograph demonstrates filamentous fibrils (arrows), also typical of amyloid.
