Cover Illustration: Rheumatism has plagued the human race since the earliest civilizations. The ancient Egyptians were, perhaps, the earliest civilization to learn of the pain-relieving effects of potions made from myrtle or willow leaves. Salicylic acid was the active ingredient in those ancient potions. Isis was an Egyptian healer who prescribed these potions. This statuette of Isis dates to the 1st century A.D., and is reproduced with permission from The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Gift of Morse Foundation.
