7A ANNOUNCEMENTS
Cover illustration: The first
clear description of rheumatoid arthritis was probably that published
by Landre-Beauvais in 1800, who called it ``la goutte asthenique primitive.''
This work was followed by others, including the famous French neurologist
Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893). In 1890, he presented a detailed account
of the disease, describing characteristic physical findings of the hands
and the fingers, including those that were later termed "swan neck"
(deformations articulaires du premier type), and "Boutonniere" deformities
(deformations articulaires du deuxieme type). He also provides other
impressive drawings of rheumatoid deformities, degenerative arthritis,
and gout in this volume. The figures presented on the cover of this
issue of Arthritis Care & Research were reproduced from Oeuvres
Competes de J. M. Charcot. Maladies des Vieillarads: Goutte et rhumatisme,
Volume 7; Paris, Lecrosnier et Babe, 1890, page 593. [Submitted by Eric
