CMS National 5010 Testing Day June 15
May 25, 2011
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has announced Wednesday, June 15, 2011 as the national day of testing for Version 5010, this is an effort to assist physician practices with implementation. This is an opportunity for trading partners (e.g., providers, clearinghouses and vendors) to test compliance efforts, with the benefits of real-time help desk and direct access to Medicare Administrative Contractors. The process will facilitate testing protocols and the transition for 5010. Also, the testing will allow providers and clearinghouses to test readiness for conversion and identify any problems prior to the January 1, 2012 compliance date.
Individual state MACs will send out information concerning testing as the date draws closer. CMS encourages providers, clearinghouses, vendors and all other HIPAA-covered entities to participate in the national testing day.
There are only seven months left for the compliance deadline – physicians who electronically submit administrative transactions, to verifying a patient's insurance eligibility, file claims, send or receive a remittance directly to an insurance company or through a clearing house will have to comply with the system updates. Practices that are unprepared for the 5010 system conversion will be at risk for interruptions to cash-flow.
