ARHP Graduate Student Recognition Award

The Graduate Student Recognition Award enables members of the ARHP or the ACR to facilitate graduate students in health-related areas, who have not yet achieved a terminal degree (including, but not limited to behavioral medicine, bioengineering, epidemiology, health services, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, psychology, physical therapy and social work), by mentoring them in the submission of an application for this award.

Students planning to conduct studies or clinical projects related to rheumatologic care should work with their ARHP or ACR mentor to complete the application process. This award was created in 2005 to encourage the interest of non-physician graduate students in the field of rheumatology. Students do not have to be ARHP members.

This initiative will recognize creative research or clinical project efforts that merge theory and clinical practice in assessing and or improving the lives of patients with rheumatic diseases, broadly defined.

Eligibility / Criteria

We invite graduate students who are planning research or a clinical project with relevance to the field of rheumatology to confer with their mentor and submit their proposal to the ARHP. If an applicant is not selected, the applicant will be considered the following year, but must update their information to be considered.

  • Students do not have to be ARHP members.
  • Mentors must be members of the ARHP or ACR.
  • The award is intended for non-physician health professionals who have not yet achieved a terminal degree. This award is nonrenewable: recipients may only receive the award once.
  • When completed, the recipient's abstract must be submitted for the ACR/ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting and if accepted will be recognized at the meeting. Any presentations or publications of the project must acknowledge support from the ARHP.

A student's application will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Strength of the letter of support
  • Productivity and potential to become an independent researcher
  • The study is feasible within the time and budget. (budget is not required)
  • The purpose of the proposal is clearly articulated and is consistent with the intent of the award.
  • The specific aims (or research questions and/or hypotheses, project objectives) are stated.
  • The significance of the study is supported through a discussion of existing literature and/or existing practices.
  • The methods of the study are scientifically sound, well justified, and are consistent with the specific aims.
  • Overall contribution of the study to the field of rheumatology
