Overview

Looking to learn the fundamentals of musculoskeletal ultrasound in a hands-on setting?

Designed to meet the specific needs of rheumatologists who want to integrate musculoskeletal ultrasound into their practice, and are currently at a beginner experience level, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for Rheumatologists--Fundamentals is an intensive two-day course that will provide a broad foundation in the anatomy and pathophysiology of the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist, hip, knee, foot and ankle and ultrasound-guidance of aspirations, injections and biopsies.

The 2012 course offered:

  • personal guidance from an international faculty of experts
  • more than seven hours of hands-on experience scanning live models
  • instruction in basic needle guidance technique
  • a comfortable 5:1 student-faculty ratio
  • CME—approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™

- Target Audience

This activity is intended for rheumatologists with a beginner or low intermediate level of ultrasound experience. To provide optimal learning environment, attendance is limited to 100 participants.

- Needs Assessment

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has been an imaging modality of continuously growing importance over the last 15 years. Of all imaging modalities in rheumatology, ultrasound receives the greatest attention by rheumatologist researchers. More papers on musculoskeletal ultrasound are being published by rheumatologists than by any other specialty. Trained rheumatologists can agree more readily on ultrasound findings than musculoskeletal radiologists can on MRI findings, based on available literature. This suggests that operator dependency is less of a concern for rheumatologists if they are adequately trained. However, such training opportunities continue to be scarce in the United States. This course is designed to help address the need for additional education.

- Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • demonstrate proper ultrasound exam technique and procedure guidance applying standardized protocols
  • identify and describe normal sonographic anatomy and fundamental pathology for rheumatology indications
  • explain the requirements for documentation related to musculoskeletal ultrasound

- CME

Accreditation Statement:
The American College of Rheumatology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Designation Statement:
The American College of Rheumatology designates this live activity for a maximum of 16 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
