Congressional leadership and the White House are actively discussing Medicare spending reductions in the debt ceiling debate. Among the list of potential reductions is a cut in the Medicare reimbursement for biologics.

Biologics are already reimbursed at artificially low rates under Medicare due to prompt-pay discounts that are included in the average sale price calculation. Further reductions in reimbursement will cause additional financial burdens to practicing rheumatologists and will impact patient access to these necessary drug therapies.
