On July 12 and 13, the House Budget Committee and House Energy & Commerce Committee will host separate hearings on the Independent Payment Advisory Board. The IPAB, authorized in the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act, is a 15-member appointed panel charged with determining cuts to the Medicare system to curb the rising cost of health care.

The ACR is strongly opposed to the IPAB and supports legislation introduced by Rep. Phil Roe, MD, (R-TN), the Medicare Decisions Accountability Act of 2011 (H.R. 452) and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) the Health Care Bureaucrats Elimination Act (S.668) that would repeal the IPAB. The ACR sent letters of support to Energy & Commerce leadership and Budget leadership commending them for holding hearings to shed light on the adverse impact that this board will have on patient access to care.
