Congress Passes 12-Month Extension to Avert Medicare Cuts

December 9, 2010

On Thursday, December 9 the House of Representatives passed the Medicare and Medicaid Extenders Act of 2010 (H.R. 4994).This legislation stabilizes Medicare physician payments at current rates by averting the scheduled 25 percent cut for 12 months, through December 31, 2011.

The legislation also includes funds to reprocess the increased payments for DXAs, a provision that was included in the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act—health care reform.

The Medicare and Medicaid Extenders Act of 2010, which passed the Senate by unanimous consent, will be sent to President Obama for his signature.

The ACR will work with the AMA, national physician organizations and Congress to permanently fix the SGR and stabilize the Medicare program to ensure fair physician reimbursement and patient access to quality care.
