Von Feldt Named 2013 Secretary of American College of Rheumatology
WASHINGTON – Joan M. Von Feldt, MD, MSEd, professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and associate chief of staff for education at the Philadelphia Veterans Medical Center, was named secretary of the American College of Rheumatology and Rheumatology Research Foundation (formerly ACR Research Education Foundation) at the ACR’s annual business meeting held this week in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Von Feldt received her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut and her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She completed her fellowship in rheumatology and also received a master’s of science in education from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Von Feldt has devoted significant time to educational activities at the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently course director of the Differential Diagnosis Course for second year medical students. In addition, she has also served as the rheumatology specialty liaison for the internal medicine residency program and program director for the rheumatology training program.
Also a practicing rheumatologist, Dr. Von Feldt’s area of interests includes rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, cardiovascular disease in rheumatic conditions and health literacy. In the past two years, Dr. Von Feldt has published more than 10 peer reviewed articles and current research projects in medical education include Diagnostic Error and Cognitive Bias in Internal Medicine Residency Training and Health Literacy and Numeracy in a Rheumatology Population. Dr. Von Feldt is also the Associate Editor of Journal of Clinical Rheumatology and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous other publications.
An active volunteer with the ACR, Dr. Von Feldt has served on the board of directors and Committee on Education. Dr. Von Feldt holds additional leadership roles with the American Board of Internal Medicine, American College of Physicians, Pan American League of Associations for Rheumatology and Philadelphia Rheumatism Society. Dr. Von Feldt has been recognized by Best Doctors in America and Philadelphia Magazine.
