Paul Phillips Named Master of American College of Rheumatology
ATLANTA – Paul E. Phillips, MD; emeritus professor and division chief at the State University New York Upstate Medical University, was named a Master of the American College of Rheumatology at a session of the American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting, on November 7 in Atlanta.
The member designation of Master is conferred by the board of directors of the College on ACR members, age 65 or older, who have made outstanding contributions to the field of rheumatology through scholarly achievement and/or service to their patients, students and profession.
Dr. Phillips immigrated to the United States from England at an early age. He graduated from St. Paul’s School, Princeton University and received his Doctor of Medicine from Albany Medical College. His internal medicine training was at Roosevelt Hospital and the Columbia Division at the Bellevue Hospital Center under Charles Ragan, MD. He also completed two years of research training at the National Institutes of Health working on the development of rubella vaccine with Paul Parkman, MD. His rheumatology fellowship was under Charles L. Christian, MD, at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, and subsequently, he was a faculty member for ten years at the Hospital for Special Surgery – Cornell Medical Center. In 1981, he became head of the division of rheumatology at the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where he has remained since. He is board-certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. He is currently professor of medicine and pediatrics at Upstate, and emeritus division head since 2001. He is also a consultant at the VA Medical Center and Crouse Hospital in Syracuse.
Dr. Phillips received the Upstate President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and is listed in multiple editions of "Who's Who" and "Best Doctors." He has also served on committees at Upstate, National Institutes of Health, the ACR and the Arthritis and Lupus Foundations.
