Joseph Markenson Named Master of American College of Rheumatology

ATLANTA – Joseph A. Markenson, MD; professor of clinical medicine at the Joan and Sanford Medical College of Cornell University, was named a Master of the American College of Rheumatology at a session of the American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting, on November 7 in Atlanta.

The member designation of Master is conferred by the board of directors of the College on ACR members, age 65 or older, who have made outstanding contributions to the field of rheumatology through scholarly achievement and/or service to their patients, students and profession.

Dr. Markenson completed his Bachelor of Arts in biology at Boston University, Masters of Business in Science in physiology and biochemistry at Rutgers University, and Doctor of Medicine at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. Following a year of internship in medicine at Kings County Hospital-Downstate Medical Center, he spent two years working under the leadership of Llewellyn F. Barker, MD, Lab of Viral Immunology, Bureau of Biologics, at the National Institutes of Health. His research focused on Hepatitis Virus. He completed his medical residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical School followed by research at the Rockefeller University under Henry G. Kunkel, MD, and a rheumatology fellowship with Charles L. Christian, MD, at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Later, he joined the department of rheumatology at The Hospital for Special Surgery-New York Presbyterian Hospital Cornell Medical School, where he has taught medical students and house staff, as well as conducted basic and clinical research for the past 35 years. He is currently a professor of clinical medicine, an attending physician and an associate scientist.

Dr. Markenson has served as the secretary-treasurer and president of both the New York Rheumatism Association and the American College of Rheumatology, northeast section. He served two terms on the ACR board and was the first chairman of fundraising for the ACR Committee on Research, ACR Research and Education Foundation. He is a member of many professional societies, including the American College of Internal Medicine, the Henry Kunkel Society, the American Association of Immunology, New York Academy of Medicine, the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American College of Occupational Medicine.
