Suzanne Bowyer Receives American College of Rheumatology Distinguished Service Award

ATLANTA – Suzanne L. Bowyer, MD; professor of pediatrics, director of the section of pediatric rheumatology, and director of the pediatric rheumatology fellowship at the Indiana University School of Medicine, received the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Rheumatology during the ACR Annual Scientific Meeting, November 6 – 11 in Atlanta.

The Distinguished Service Award is given to an ACR member for outstanding and sustained service to the ACR.

Dr. Bowyer graduated from the University of Michigan Medicine School and completed a pediatric rheumatology fellowship at the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Additional experience includes serving as a pediatric rheumatologist at the University of Michigan, University of Colorado and Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. Dr. Bowyer also worked at Indiana University as the director of the section of pediatric rheumatology.

Dr. Bowyer has served as an ACR volunteer for nearly 15 years. She was elected to the executive committee of the Pediatric Section in 1995 and served two consecutive terms. In 2003, she was elected chair of the committee and re-elected three years later for a second term. She also served on the Committee on Rheumatology Workforce and Training Issues from 2002 through 2005. During that time, she was in charge of putting together the program for the annual Program Director’s Retreat.

In addition to ACR activities, she served on the American Board of Pediatrics’ sub-board of pediatric rheumatology from 1997 through 2002 and during the last two years, chaired the committee. She also served as a subspecialty representative on the board of pediatrics from 2003 through 2006.

She has received teaching awards from the University of Michigan, LA Children’s Hospital and the Indiana University board of trustees. Dr. Bowyer’s most recent awards include Indiana University’s Morris Green Faculty Teaching Award, the James T. Cassidy Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Rheumatology, the Humanitarian Award from the Indiana Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and the 2009 Deborah Kredich Award from the ACR.
